African Union Condemns Niger Attacks

(MENAFN) The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, denounced the recent assaults in Niger, including an attack on Niamey’s Hamani Diori International Airport, and reiterated the bloc’s unity with the nation.

Youssouf stated he learned “with deep concern” about the armed assault at the airport during the night of Jan. 28–29 and conveyed “profound sadness” regarding another lethal attack on Jan. 18 in the village of Bosiye in western Niger, which claimed the lives of approximately 30 civilians.

“These heinous acts form part of the campaign of terror conducted by violent extremist groups deliberately targeting civilian populations and public infrastructure,” he remarked. He also praised the “swift and effective response of the Nigerien security forces,” noting that their actions helped contain the airport attack.

The African Union leader emphasized the organization’s solidarity with Niger’s population and extended condolences to the victims’ families as well as to the Nigerien government.

Youssouf highlighted the efforts of Nigerien authorities in tackling terrorism and violent extremism, referencing operations conducted by the country’s armed forces.

He pointed out “the significant results achieved during the recent large-scale operation in the Tillabéri region,” which included neutralizing multiple armed actors, dismantling terror groups, and recovering property looted from local communities.

He reiterated that terrorism and violent extremism represent a grave threat to peace, stability, and territorial integrity in affected nations, assuring that the African Union Commission remains committed to supporting Niger’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
