Death Toll from Assault on Nigerian Market Climbs

(MENAFN) Local reports confirmed Sunday that the number of fatalities from an armed raid on a market in Niger state has risen to 50.

On Saturday, members of an armed gang stormed the Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, firing indiscriminately at residents, abducting several individuals, and seizing food supplies.
A collective funeral was held for the victims, while those injured were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

President Bola Tinubu denounced the attack and directed security forces to capture those responsible.

“They are testing the resolve of our nation and must face the full consequences of their criminal actions,” he declared. Tinubu also ordered authorities to swiftly rescue all abducted persons.

Niger state has faced a series of terrorist assaults in recent weeks, particularly in rural areas vulnerable to armed groups operating from forested regions.

On November 21 of last year, gunmen kidnapped 315 people — including 303 students and 12 teachers — from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area. Roughly 50 pupils managed to escape within the first day and were reunited with their families, while the federal government later secured the release of 100 more.

By December 21, Information Minister Mohammed Idris announced that all remaining abducted students had been freed.
